Lyon,France

Capital of the Gauls, Renaissance trading center, Mecca of the silk industry and birth place of cinema, during its 2000-year history Lyon has founded its development and influence on intense economic, commercial and cultural activity.
Thanks to its wealth, talent, ambition and wisdom, the city benefits from the ideas of those who enter its gates.
To lovers of the finer things in life, Lyon offers its prestigious heritage, along with easy access to the Alpine slopes and the Mediterranean sun.

Lyon, the natural crossroads between northern Europe and the Mediterranean coast, is located in the heart of the Rhône-Alpes region, an area of greatly contrasted topography with the Alps to the east, the Massif Central plateau to the west, and the Saône-Rhône valley sweeping down the middle. The city of Lyon has developed a network of international transport communications in this quality setting.

A strategic position

Both a European metropolis and the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region (France's most important after Paris), Lyon covers 11,967 acres. It is the number 2 conurbation in France (1.2 million residents for an area of 137,500 acres). Every year the city attracts a great number of visitors for business and tourism. Located between northern and southern Europe, the Lyon area has been throughout history a stopping place for trade and cultural exchanges. Centuries later, it continues to fulfill this role in a variety of fields.

The Lyon metropolitan area in the heart of the Rhône-Alpes region

Any presentation of the capital city of Lyon must be given in the context of the entire region. The Rhône-Alpes region claims more than 5 million inhabitants (9.5% of the French population). It is one of the most industrialized regions of France and is home to 50 world leaders in various economic sectors. Lyon is the binding force in a dense and well-balanced galaxy of mid-size cities (Grenoble, Chambéry, Saint-Etienne, Annecy, etc.) whose increasingly close relations allow the entire Rhône-Alpes region to shine amongst the most influential regions of Europe.

General Presentation

Halfway between sea and mountain, the city is characterized by duality. The two hills - Fourvière and Croix-Rousse - and the two rivers flowing by, each with its own pace, reveal the distinct faces of the city. Dynamic and seductive, energetic and gentle, Lyon displays certain traits that are typical of a northern town and others that bear witness to its Latin ties. Another exceptional trait: the city is situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Rhône and the Saône. The Presqu'île, or peninsula, lying in-between, is Lyon's distinctive physical feature. This geographical particularity results in a multi-leveled urban landscape. At land's end, beyond the two bridges of La Mulatière, the turbulent mix of two waters begins. The climate in the Lyon area is temperate and sunny. The average annual temperature is 11.3 degree Celsius (52.3 degree Fahrenheit) with 2,006 hours of sunshine.

The Rhône and Saône rivers

In Lyon, the Rhône and the Saône are such a strong presence in the landscape, the history and the life of the city that they carry a special symbolic significance that is an intrinsic part of Lyon's identity. Power and sensuality are two qualities that come frequently to mind and these take shape in a sculpture by Puvis de Chavannnes situated on the northern facade of the Chamber of Commerce, in the heart of the Presqu'île. The rivers are symbolized by the two intertwined figures of the Rhône, strong and masculine, and the Saône, graceful and feminine.
