Cesar Ritz, the Swiss Hotellier who inspired the word ritzy, had virtually retired by 1906 when this hotel was built and named after him.  The colonnaded front of the dominant, chateau-style building was put up in 1906 to suggest Paris, where the grandest hotels were to be found at the turn of the century.  It has managed to maintain its Edwardian air of opulence and grandeur and is a popular stop, with those suitably dressed, for an extravagant afternoon tea.

Covent Garden. London, England. A former fruit and vegetable market.  It is now a popular center for arts, crafts,  winebars and pubs. Near Theatre Museum, St. Paul's, just north west of Waterloo station. The 17th century Architect Indigo Jones planned the Piazza in Covent Garden as an elegant residential square, modeled on the piazza in the Tuscan town of Livorno, which he had seen under construction during his travels in Italy.  For a brief period, the Piazza became one of the most fashionable addresses in London, but it was superseded by the even grander St. James Square which lies to the southwest.

Decline accelerated when a fruit and vegetable market developed. By the mid 18th century, the Piazza had become a haunt of prostitutes and most of its houses had turned into seedy lodgings, gambling dens, brothels and taverns.

Meanwhile, the wholesale produce market became the largest in the country, and in 1829 a market hall was erected to ease congestion.  The market, however, soon outgrew its new home and despite the construction of new buildings, such as Floral and Jubilee halls, the congestion grew worse.  In 1973 the market moved to a new site in south London,  and over the past two decades Covent Garden has been redeveloped.  Today only St. Paul's remains of Indigo Jones buildings, and Covent Garden, with its many small shops, cafes, restaurants, market stalls and street entertainers, is one of central London's liveliest districts.  The restaurant on the roof requires reservations to eat outside, or we could have waited about 20 minutes for a table.  We ate across the street at    Tuttons Brasserie instead and had a wonderful meal.
